Some people have no difficulty deciding where to go on honeymoon – after all, it’s the perfect excuse to splash out and treat yourself to the dream holiday you’ve been lusting after for years.

For others, it’s not so easy. It may just be that there are so many places you’d love to go, it’s impossible to choose just one. Or it may be that the wedding’s taken up pretty much your whole budget, and you’re not sure how to get the honeymoon you want for the right price.
Here are just a few ideas to help get you started…

Walking in a (Northern Scandinavian) winter wonderland

It may not be most people’s first thought for a holiday destination, but northern Scandinavia has lots to offer. Not least is the chance to glimpse the amazing Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) – surely one of the most awe-inspiring natural wonders in the world. With the additional attractions of cosy log cabins and luxury ski accommodation, panoramic views of fjords and mountains, dog sledding and outdoor hot tubs, northern Scandinavia provides one of the most romantic getaways imaginable.

Locations to check out:
Tromso, one of Norway’s northernmost cities, is full of culture and surrounded by stunning mountains, fjords and islands.

Hvalfjördur, on the west coast of Iceland, takes its name from the whales that are regularly seen along its shores. As well as whale-watching, you can relax in natural geothermal hot tubs, and hike up to Iceland’s highest waterfall.

What’s mine is yours… fancy swapping homes?

If money’s tight, one way to make your dream destination more affordable is to visit on a home exchange, arranged through a company that specializes in matching people up. Handing over your keys to some strangers might sound scary, but if you’re brave enough to give it a go you could end up not only having the trip of a lifetime with free accomodation, but also making some new friends and getting a real taste of how the locals live.

How it works:

The first step is to sign up with a home swapping organisor, which you can do online. This allows you to see other members of the group, so you can browse for homes available in your preferred destinations. You then need to make contact and find a member who’d like to swap with you, and arrange a time frame that works for you
both.
The company should provide an exchange agreement system, in which both parties sign up to what’s been agreeed. This may include taking care of pets or plants, swapping cars and so on.

Have your cake and eat it in South America

If you’re having difficulty deciding what kind of holiday you want, a South American honeymoon could be the answer – with so much variety, you there’s no need to narrow down your choices to just one. Take your pick from horse riding, whale watching, glacier trekking, wild water rafting – and of course a bit of R&R in luxury spas and on beautiful beaches.

Where to go:
Admittedly, an entire continent is not exactly a decision made, and choosing just one of South America’s many naturally beautiful regions is a pretty tough call. Here are some suggestions based on your main priority…

For unspoiled wildlife: The Galapagos Islands, directly on the equator, are protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They can be explored on cruises from Peru and Ecuador.
For gorgeous beaches: Colombia’s Parque Nacional Tayrona has stunning beaches in deep bays, shaded by coconut trees and some bordered by coral reefs. The national park also offers rainforest and wildlife, and historic ruins.
For glacier trekking: Bolivia’s Laguna Glaciar can be easily accessed from capital city La Paz, and is suitable for those of only intermediate toughness! On route you can check out some traditional villages, enjoy incredible mountain views and afterwards boast that you’ve visited one of the highest lakes in the world. Travelling in Bolivia is also very cheap, even in relation to the rest of South America.

Share your honeymoon ideas

Have you just booked your dream trip? Or are you taking a risk on something new? Maybe you’ve got a story to share about how you honeymooned on a budget? We’d love to hear about some of your honeymoon suggestions, experiences, or tips for unique or money-saving trips – contact us and you could help another couple resolve their honeymoon dilemma!
